Parent–Infant Work
Common Ground Therapy offers parent-infant work to families across south-east London. Parent–infant work is a specialist form of therapy that focuses on the relationship between a parent or carer and their baby or very young child (typically ages 0–3). It recognises that the earliest relationships are foundational to a child’s emotional and psychological development.
This work is particularly relevant when the relationship between parent and infant feels difficult, stuck, or distressing — whether due to the parent’s own history, the circumstances of the birth, or the infant’s temperament or behaviour.
Who is it for?
Parent–infant work may be helpful when:
- A parent is struggling to feel connected to their baby
- There are concerns about feeding, sleeping, or settling
- A parent has a history of trauma, loss, or difficult early experiences that may be affecting the relationship
- The birth was traumatic or the infant has experienced early medical difficulties
- A parent is experiencing postnatal depression or anxiety
What to expect
Sessions typically involve the parent(s) and infant attending together. The therapist pays close attention to the interactions between parent and child, offering reflections that help the parent to understand their infant’s communications and their own responses.
