Dr. Nicholas Frealand (he/him)

I am a Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist registered with the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP).

I trained at the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust from 2012 to 2022, obtaining a Doctorate in psychotherapy in the process. In the context of this training I had London-based roles and placements in a wide range of statutory, private, voluntary, charity and cooperative sectors at settings including Early Years Nursery, Primary School, Secure Unit, Pupil Referral Unit and NHS’ community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

My key training and research specialism includes recognition of the critical impact that social identity, culture, language and power can have upon psychological experience, general well-being and personal development. This perspective informs my work with particular care and sensitivity to how these factors operate within the therapy process which is mediated by social class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gendered identity.

My wider training and practice specialisms have included work with Groups, Families, Parents/Carers, adolescents, Looked-After, Fostered and Adopted children, and Complex Trauma — notably where the effects of different forms of abuse or neglect may be interlinked with neurological features that may be diagnosed as autism, ASD, ADHD, or ODD.

Since 2023 I have combined my individual private practice with the development of Common Ground Therapy Worker Cooperative. My motivation for this is that I believe that, like any workers, therapists who share responsibility for the ownership and directorship of where they work provide better quality therapy than therapists who may feel burnt out, isolated and/or exploited by work where democracy and collaboration is absent.
