For parents & caregivers

Therapeutic Parent Work

Common Ground Therapy offers therapeutic parent work to parents and carers across south-east London. Therapeutic parent work supports parents and caregivers to reflect on their role and better connect with their child’s emotional experiences. It is particularly valuable for those caring for children who have experienced trauma, loss, or early adversity — including looked-after, fostered, and adopted children.

This is not parenting instruction. It is a reflective, therapeutic space in which parents and carers can explore their own responses, understand their child’s behaviour in a new light, and develop a more attuned and confident relationship.

Who is it for?

Therapeutic parent work may be helpful for:

  • Adoptive parents and foster carers
  • Parents of children with complex trauma histories
  • Parents struggling to understand or respond to their child’s behaviour
  • Parents who wish to reflect on their own childhood experiences and how these affect their parenting
  • Parents of children with neurodevelopmental differences

What to expect

Sessions are held with the parent or carer alone (without the child present). The work draws on psychoanalytic and attachment-informed principles to help parents develop a richer understanding of their child’s inner world and their own role within it.
